Fang of the Shedding Serpent, a homebrew dagger made for Dungeons and Dragons 5e

A magic item that replenishes Hit Points at the expense of Hit Dice.

Magic Item

Fang of the Shedding Serpent is a rare magical dagger made from a quartz crystal. It is fashioned to look like a serpent's fang, with a hilt wrapped in snake skin.

This magic item has two charges and requires attunement. Once attuned the wielder of the dagger can use an action to expend a charge allowing them to roll a number of Hit Dice equal to or less than their proficiency bonus.

They regain Hit Points equal to the number rolled + their Constitution Modifier, in addition when the wielder expends a charge, they shed the outer layer of skin and can choose to end one of the following effects: Petrified or Poisoned.

Mortal Husk

The shed skin is left behind and can be used by a spellcaster as a reagent for spells such as scrying. Hags, for example, could use the shed skin as a tracking beacon to send monsters after the wielder.

This could be used as a plot hook if your BBEG uses monsters like the banderhobb or invisible stalker to track targets.

Would you use the Fang in your campaign? What class would you give the item to? What kind of monster would your BBEG send after your players? Let me know in the comments.
